TAC Road Smart Interactive

Road safety becomes more tangible when students can make a choice, see its consequences and explore why it matters. Road Smart Interactive, a Transport Accident Commission (TAC) program, brings that approach into Victorian secondary schools through facilitated digital activities and virtual reality.

Working with TAC and Museums Victoria, Cypha helped evolve the applications behind the experience. We reviewed the inherited software, improved existing activities and facilitator controls, adapted new tablet and VR experiences, and prepared the system for ongoing delivery.

The Challenge

The program brought together student iPads, a facilitator application, shared scoring, video and VR. New activities needed to fit into that connected environment and work alongside experiences already in use.

That meant looking beyond individual screens. Students needed clear choices, useful feedback and a coherent journey through each activity. Facilitators needed to manage devices, guide groups through the session and understand what to do when an experience or connection was interrupted.

The challenge was to extend the learning experience while understanding and improving the system that supported it.

Discovery & Delivery

We began with technical discovery and a review of the existing applications, integrations and facilitator tools. By reverse engineering the inherited code, we reconstructed how experiences launched, devices joined sessions, scores were shared and recovery controls behaved.

This work informed development priorities and produced technical documentation and flow diagrams. It gave the project team a clearer view of the dependencies between student activities, facilitator actions and device behaviour.

Across the wider application suite, we updated existing activities, corrected scoring and progression issues, refined device identification and recovery behaviour, and improved the integration between the student and facilitator applications. Selected enhancements, including networked scoring, were also carried across to on-site touchscreen versions.

Testing and feedback informed successive releases. We developed technical and operational guides, documented release processes, and prepared source code, builds and supporting materials for handover.

The Solution

Crash Lab

We adapted Crash Lab from the Road to Zero museum experience for the school program's iPads. Students take on the role of a road safety engineer, select vehicle safety features and watch a simulated collision unfold.

Feedback explains which choices helped and why, while group leaderboards bring a shared dimension to the activity. Later updates refined safety-feature options and collision outcomes.

Global Outlook

We adapted and integrated Global Outlook so students could explore road safety around the world and compare other countries with Victoria. Questions, explanations and group scores connect the data to an interactive learning activity.

We also improved the way participants progressed to the leaderboard, coordinating the group result when students completed the activity at different times.

Roadtrip to Zero

We adapted the existing Roadtrip to Zero experience for Quest 2 headsets. Alongside the supplied VR content, our work focused on how the experience operated: automatic launch, playback and reset behaviour, and preparation for the next participant.

Facilitator guidance covered setup, everyday use and troubleshooting.

The Outcome

Cypha delivered integrated tablet and VR adaptations, targeted improvements across the inherited application suite, and documentation to support the people running it.

The completed work gave TAC and its delivery partners updated learning experiences and a documented technical and operational foundation for ongoing program delivery. It demonstrates our ability to understand an existing system, make considered improvements and carry the work through to handover.
